The benefits of music and music study are well documented, increasing everything from teamwork skills to discipline to creative problem solving. The NGSO is committed to outreach education programs that enhance these skills among local students. Our youth programs, the Newark-Granville Youth Symphony and the Chamber Strings are a big part of upholding that commitment.

The Newark-Granville Youth Symphony, under the direction of Susan Larson, offers young musicians in Licking County the opportunity to learn and perform classical music in an advanced group with their peers. This experience has inspired many to go on to pursue college degrees in music, the majority of them with music scholarships. The NGYS was the only youth symphony to perform at the 2011 Capitol Music Festival at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and has been invited to perform in Europe.
Last year we added a second youth ensemble, the Newark-Granville Chamber Strings, to help meet the needs of beginning performers. This beginning ensemble, directed by Ginny Workman, has truly taken off, building a foundation for the next generation of string musicians.
